In 1706 Turin had forty thousand inhabitants .
It spread out on the area of the Roman town ( the quadrilateral ) and on the subsequent extensions of the seventeenth century when it had become the capital city of the Duchy of Savoia.
The southern boundary was “porta nuova “ at the far end of present Via Roma ,while the eastern one was “porta Po “ at the end of modern Via Po.
The town was surrounded by walls and on the western side stood the “ Cittadella “ wanted by Duke Emanuele Filiberto.
